Are you looking to maximize the range and lifespan of your new lithium-ion battery for your e-bike? Balancing the battery cells is a crucial step in ensuring optimal performance. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to balance the battery cells for a new battery to maximize its range:

For a new battery, follow these steps for your first 3 rides/charges, irrespective of the distance covered or the amount of battery used:

  1. Charge the battery outside of the bike and leave it on the charger for up to 4 hours after the light has turned green, but not exceeding 8 hours with a 4/5-speed charger, or 12 hours with a 2/3a charger.
  2. Disconnect the charger from the outlet first, then from the battery.
  3. Ride the bike as usual, using pedal assist and throttle if available.
  4. It’s alright to discharge only a portion or the entire battery before the next charge.
  5. Repeat steps 1-3 for the first 3 rides only.
  6. You can resume using your bike normally after completing these steps.

When to perform cell balancing:

  • Upon receiving your new battery
  • If the battery has been stored long-term
  • If you notice a decrease in range or charge capacity
  • As a proactive measure, perform this monthly, but no more than once a month.

Key points to maintain your battery in good condition and ensure safety:

  • Avoid leaving the battery on the charger longer than recommended.
  • Never leave the battery unattended while charging.
  • Charge the battery at room temperature, not when it’s cold.
  • Allow the battery to cool down after charging and before using.
  • Try to discharge the battery between 20%-60% before recharging instead of “Top Off” charging every ride.
  • When storing the battery, keep it at least 70% charged and check monthly.
  • Regularly inspect the fuse for any signs of damage and replace if needed.
  • Avoid charging the battery if it’s below freezing (0°C/32°F) or above 40°C/104°F; bring it to room temperature before charging in cold conditions.

By following these guidelines, you can enhance the performance and longevity of your e-bike’s lithium-ion battery. Happy riding!
