Event Overview:
Join us for an exciting and leisurely bike adventure on the Trans Canada Trail (TCT), the longest recreational trail in the world! While the full trail spans thousands of kilometers, we’re keeping it manageable with a fun 54 km round trip from Lacombe to Red Deer. This paved, flat route is perfect for recreational riders, offering stunning scenery, unique landmarks, and a chance to explore off the beaten path—away from motor traffic. It’s an easy day out for cyclists of all levels, with optional extensions for those wanting more adventure.
Meeting Point and Start:
We’ll meet at the iconic World’s Largest Fishing Lure in Lacombe, located at Len Thompson Drive, Lacombe. Parking is available on the lot there, so arrive early to park and get ready. The ride begins promptly, so plan to be there by 9:15AM.
Itinerary:
- Distance and Pace: The one-way stretch from Lacombe to Red Deer is just 27 km, relatively flat, and takes about 1.5 hours at a relaxed recreational pace. The full round trip will cover 54 km, with the entire event lasting 4-5 hours (including rest stops).
- Route Highlights: We’ll meander through Lacombe, pass by the serene Lacombe Lake, and continue through Blackfalds—where the trail uniquely goes indoors through the Abby Centre (the only spot in Canada where the TCT passes through a building!). The ride ends in Red Deer for a well-deserved lunch break before heading back to Lacombe.
- Optional Extension: For those feeling energetic, we can discuss extending the ride further—details will be shared on the day.
This is a great opportunity to enjoy a paved trail that’s safe, scenic, and full of interesting stops. Expect a mix of urban and natural landscapes, making for an engaging and memorable ride.
What to Bring and Safety Tips:
- Essentials: Bring plenty of water, an energy drink, and road snacks to keep your energy up during the ride.
- Safety Gear: A helmet is mandatory for all participants. Reflective vests are optional but highly recommended for better visibility, especially if riding in varying light conditions.
- Other Prep: Dress for the weather, wear comfortable cycling clothes, and bring a bike in good working condition. We’ll have a quick safety briefing at the start.
